The 1975's 'The Sound' is an example of a performance video. In the video the band is just performing, there isn't a story like a narrative video. The majority of the 1975's music videos are performance videos which is why their videos are so popular. Within a performance video there are certain things you would expect to see; for example the band and the instruments and singing. There can also be a crowd, either fake or real.
At the beginning of the music video there is an establishing shot of the band, the colour pink is prominent with dim lighting; The 1975 are known for their aesthetics. The prestigious band love to feature the lighting both above them and behind them as they perform, which are always changing colour during their live performances. At Reading Festival they did the same as the video.
Within the music video there are several close ups of the main singers face, this further highlights that it is a performance video, in some aspects acting his emotion across. Also, the lead singer Matt Healy is wearing dark eye makeup. This has almost become a part of Matt Healy's artistic branding, challenging the concept of gender roles in the music industry and the portrayal of his image is replicated in different videos. Such as the long curly hair and designer clothing. I personally prefer performance videos to narrative or concept videos because I prefer watching a band perform rather than having a story music video that can sometimes be confusing and hard to grasp at first like Michael Jackson's Thriller.
